W Hollar fc 1641
Etching, sheet 160 x 105mm (6¼ x 4"). Tipped into album sheet.
Alexander Henderson (c.1583-1646), Church of Scotland minister and politician. Henderson was a key figure at the heart of the Scottish convenanter revolution which resisted the attempts of Charles I and William Laud to impose a new liturgy on the Scots. Henderson was behind almost every key development between 1637 and 1646: orchestrating original protests against Charles' new Anglican prayer book, drafting the national covenant, guiding the Glasgow assembly to the abolition of episcopacy, defending armed resistance in the bishops' wars, and many other important developments. Few individuals did more to lay the groundwork for the presbyterian church of Scotland. Etched by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77), Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England after meeting the earl of Arundel in Cologne in 1636. Arundel, Hollar's patron, commanded Charles' forces in the bishops' wars and Hollar etched several portraits and scenes of important figures and events in the wars.
