An classical allegory of January: a priest burns incense in a turibulum, a cockerel at his feet. An illustration from the 'Tetrastichs of Ausonius', by Decimus Magnus Ausonius (c. 310-c. 395), with each tetrastich (the four-line stanza under the image) celebrating a month. The engraver, Tobias Sadeler, son of Ęgidius Sadeler II, was working in Vienna in the 1670s.
