[Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough] The high and mighty Prince Charles D.ke of Marlbor:gh.

G. Lens del. Johnson fecit.
[n.d., c.1760.]
Fine and rare mezzotint. Sheet 350 x 250mm (13¾ x 9¾"). Trimmed to plate. Crease.
A fine equestrian portrait of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough (1706-1758), sword in hand, celebrating his famous 'Descent' on St Malo in 1758. The Continental use of 'Prince' in the title comes from an address to the French locals during the Descent, which started 'We the High and Mighty Prince, Charles Duke of Marlborough, Marquis of Blanndford, Earl of Sunderland, Baron Churchill...', promising to leave non-combatants alone.
