Who is it grumbles at Income Tax ? /

Who is it grumbles at Income Tax ? / I point with pride to the slaughtered blacks ! / what yards of crape are wanted by their widowed wives! / And loudly Cheer, with three times three. / The Pretty little coronet, and great big B!

[n.d., c.1880.]
Rare chromolithograph. 135 x 90mm (5¼ x 3½").
A caricature portrait of Benjamin Disraeli gloating over the news from South Africa, after Britain has crushed the Zulu nation at the Battle of Ulundi, 4th July 1879. Although it restored the British government's reputation after the disastrous Battle of Isandlwana (22nd January), the slaughter of the Zulus by Gatling gun and cannon (500 dead and over 1000 wounded, against ten dead and 87 wounded British) raised some concerns.
