Frank Debenham (1837-1917) inherited a thriving business selling clothes and fabrics, from his father William (Freebody was the maiden name of William Debenham's wife). It was Debenham's son Ernest (1865-1952), however, who would see the transformation of the fashionable millinery business into the chain of Debenhams department stores which continues to this day.
