Christoph Weigel exudit Norimberga.
Mezzotint, very fine and rare. Plate: 250 x 345mm (9¾ x 13½").
Henri de Massue de Ruvigny (1648-1720), a French Huguenot. Despite his high standing in France (including being ambassador to England), he went into exile after the revocation of the edict of Nantes in 1685, settling in England. In 1690 he joined the English army as a major-general of horse. In 1692 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the forces in Ireland, and later the same year he was created Viscount Galway and Baron Portarlington, in recognition of his services at the battle of Aughrim. He became Earl of Galway in 1697.
