[Spain] [Ferdinand of Austria.] Ventis et DIS Venit Ille Secundis.
[Antwerp, 1635.]
Engraving. 365 x 270mm (14¼ x 10½"). Lateral crease.
An allegorical plate, representing Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand (1609-41) travelling to Italy on a ship being pushed by mer-people. His father. Philip II of Spain, had him made Archbishop of Toledo aged 10 and a cardinal soon after (although he was never actually ordained). This allowed him an income while serving as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and a military commander during the Thirty Years' War which saw Spain lose control of much of the Spanish Netherlands.
