A seated portrait of William Wordsworth (1770-1850), before an arched window. The painter, Margaret Gillies (1803-87), a Scottish painter known for her portraits of Wordsworth & Charles Dickens. For many years she lived with Thomas Southwood Smith, the physician who dissected Jeremy Bentham in 1832: Bentham's 'auto-con' (the box holding his preserved body) lived with them until 1850 when it was acquired by University College London.
