[W. Watts del. Gravé par Guyot.]
[Chez Guyot Graveur et Md. d'estampe Paris. c.1788.]
Proof before letters impression. Very scarce. Platemark: 175 x 220mm (6¾ x 8¾"). Very large margins.
Welbore Ellis's country cottage in Twickenham, Middlesex, depicting the house surrounded by trees, on the riverbank, with boats in the foreground and a group of figures with cattle to the left. Welbore Ellis, 1st Baron Mendip (1713 - 1802) was a British statesman. He held a number of political offices, including briefly serving as Secretary for the Colonies in 1782 during the American War of Independence. A proof impression from 'Des Jardins Anglais', a set of twelve plates representing lodges around London, first advertised in the Journal de Paris, 13th November 1788. Only five plates, etched by Guyot, are known, and it is quite possible that the rest of the set has actually never been engraved.
Gascoigne, 'Images of Twickenham': 216.
[Ref: 37716]  £380.00
