Fine coloured mezzotint, platemark 540 x 340mm (21¼ x 13½"0). Very large margins.
Scene from Shakespeares' 'Romeo and Juliet' in which Juliet awakens to find that Romeo, believing her to be dead, has killed himself. It is therefore poised at the moment before Juliet takes her own life. Transparency by Edward Orme (1774 - 1821) publisher, printer and printmaker. Orme led the market in transparencies, coloured prints chemically treated to render certain parts of the image transparent when held to the light. This could create effective illusions of moonlight, fire etc. Due to their popularity few have survived.
