[Four plates from 'A Visit to Iceland and the Scandinavian North' by Ida Pfeiffer]

[Four plates from 'A Visit to Iceland and the Scandinavian North' by Ida Pfeiffer]Mines of Danemora; The Geysers. Boiling Springs; Hecla; Falls of Trollhatta.

[London: Ingram, Cooke, and Co. / 227 Strand / 1852]
Four tinted wood-engravings glued to backing sheet, sheet 400 x 250mm (15¾ x 9¾"). Rare.
Four of the eight plates to the British publication of Ida Pfeiffer's 'Visit to Iceland and the Scandinavian North' (first published in German, 1846). The Dannemora mine in Sweden was an iron ore mine which has been in use for several hundred years, and the Trollhättan falls in Sweden. Other plates show a geyser in Iceland, and the volcano of Hekla (which erupted in 1845, when Pfeiffer visited the island). Pfeiffer (1797-1858) was one of the first female explorers, who published several books of her journeys. These also included accounts of visits to the Holy Land and Madagascar, and two narratives of separate trips around the world.
