Sir Richard Steele (1672-1729), Irish writer and politician, co-founder, with his friend Joseph Addison, of 'The Spectator'. He was also a prominent member of the Whig Kit-Kat Club, which had been founded by the publisher of this portrait, Jacob Tonson.
