Map of Kochi, on the west coast of India, published in Francois Valentijn's 'Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien'. Once an important spice trading centre, the remains of Vasco da Gama, the first European explorer to set sail for India, were buried in a local church until they were returned to Portugal in 1539.
