A view of the port of Trieste in north eastern Italy. Originally an Illyrian settlement, the city was later captured by the Carni, a tribe of the Eastern Alps, before becoming part of the Roman republic in 177 BC. It is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste and throughout history it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures. This view taken form the Grand Canal shows several vesssels on the water, numerous figures on the quay and the Carciotti palace to the left. After Philipe Benoist (1813-1880), with titles in French and Italian.
