The Virgin Child and St. JohnFrom a most Capital and Perfect Picture by Raphael, in the Collection of J. Purling
Raphael pinxt. PW Tomkins Sculpt. late pupil of Bartolozzi.
[Publd as the Act directs Aug. 20 1789 by P.W.Tomkins Fulham]
Stipple printed in sepia, sheet 285 x 180mm (11¼ x 7"). Trimmed inside platemark, losing publication line. Bit messy in title
The Virgin, infant Christ and John the Baptist. The composition bears some similarities to Raphael's 'Madonna della Seggiola' (Florence, Pitti Palace) but the attribution to Raphael here is far from certain. The engraver P.W. Tomkins was one of many students of Francesco Bartolozzi who noted on his own prints that he had been taught by that most celebrated of stipple engravers.
[Ref: 32219] £95.00
