Portrait of Sir William Fairbairn (1789-1874), 1st Baronet (of Ardwick), a Scottish civil engineer and shipbuilder, designer of the box girder system used by Robert Stephenson to build the Conway and Britannia Bridges. In this portrait Fairbairn points to a design sheet for the Conway Bridge, on which a letter to Stephenson rests.
