St Paul de Loanda.

St Paul de Loanda.

[Adam & Co. n.d. c.1880.]
Tinted lithograph and with added colour. 198 x 284mm (7¾ x 11¼").
A view of Luanda, formerly known as São Paulo da Assunção de Loanda, the capital and largest city of Angola. It is located on Angola's coast with the Atlantic Ocean and serves as Angola's chief seaport and administrative centre. Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais founded Luanda in 1576 as "São Paulo da Assumpção de Loanda" with a hundred families of settlers and four hundred soldiers. It is the world's third most populous Portuguese-speaking city, behind only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; it is also the most populous Portuguese-speaking capital in the world, ahead of Brasilia, Maputo and Lisbon. Illustration for 'The Life and Explorations of Dr Livingstone'.
