The Fengu (a Bantu people of Fingoland (Mfenguland), the South West portion of the Transkei) were allies of the Cape Colony in the frontier wars of the period, having been historically oppressed by the Xhosa. The view is plate 18 from 'Scenes in Kafirland, and Incidents in the Kafir War of 1851-2-3. From Sketches by Two Officers of the 43rd L.t-Infantry'. a record of the 7th Xhosa Wars. The only clue to the artists is their initials, 'LG' and 'HR'; according to Mendelssohn's perusal of Hart's Army List, the only matching serving officers were Lieutenants Lumley Graham and Hugh Robinson.
