[A military emcampment defended by trenches and embankments.]
J.A. [Jost Amman.]
[Frankfurt am Main: Sigmund Feierabend, 1573.]
Very scarce etching. Sheet 265 x 370mm (11 x 14½"). Trimmed close to printed border.
A rare illustration of a sixteenth century military encampment, with angled trenches and embankments protecting the artillary pieces. Some soldiers patrol the trenches while others are in formations witin the defences. The parts of the camp are lettered for a key, not here. This is an illustration from Leonhard Fronsperger's 'Kriegsbuch' (Book of War), one of the most important military works of the sixteenth century. Fronsperger wrote from his own military experiences in the Holy League fighting the Turks in the 1560s. He died in a shooting accident.
