[Various ranks of an army.]

[Various ranks of an army.]

J.A. [Jost Amman.]
[Frankfurt am Main: Sigmund Feierabend, 1573.]
Very scarce etching. Sheet 265 x 370mm (11 x 14½"). Trimmed close to printed border.
A rare illustration of a sixteenth century army, showing the infantry, cavalry with lances or muskets, infantry, standard bearers, captains of both infantry and cavalry, and the 'Conestabilis' (i.e., Count of the Stables, origin of the English word 'Constable'). The view is an oval, within a strap-work frame. This is an illustration from Leonhard Fronsperger's 'Kriegsbuch' (Book of War), one of the most important military works of the sixteenth century. Fronsperger wrote from his own military experiences in the Holy League fighting the Turks in the 1560s. He died in a shooting accident.
