Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) the Dutch botanist, humanist and physician. He is regarded as the founder of clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital. He was the first to isolate the chemical urea and urine. One of a number of stipple heads of Kings and Queens of similar format printed on quarto sheets, by Chapman, published by J. Wilkes, 1795-1810. They probably appeared as illustrations to the 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature ... Embellished by ... engravings.
