Running between London Bridge and Greenwich, the first part of the London & Greenwich Railway opened in 1836, with the entire line completed in 1838. Designed specifically for passenger traffic, it was the first railway in London, and the forerunner of the many inner suburban commuter systems. From Joseph Meyer's "Universum oder abbildung und beschreibung des sehenswerthesten ... der natur und kunst" (Hildburghausen : 1833-1860).
