Martin Hinrch Carl Lichtenstein (1780-1857) was a German physician, explorer, zoologist and herpetologist. Between 1802 and 1806 he travelled in southern Africa, becoming the personal physician of the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. As a result of his 1810 publication 'Reisen im sudlichen Africa', he was appointed professor of zoology at the University of Berlin, and appointed director of the Berlin Zoological Museum in 1813. He was responsible for the creation of Berlin's Zoological Gardens in 1841.
