Portrait bust, facing three-quarter to left; in an oval. Book-illustration to Vol. 6, 'Biographia Navalis' (J. Charnock; London, 1794-8). Admiral Edward Hawke, 1st Baron Hawke (1705-1781) was made an admiral in 1745 and led the fleet at victories over the French in the second battle of Toulon in 1747, and the battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759. He was appointed Admiral of the Blue in 1757 and later First Lord of the Admiralty from 1766 until 1771.
