The Seven Bishops, wearing bands and episcopal robes; above, mitre and medals depicting the Tower of London and the scales of justice. Illustration to an unidentified book. The were imprisoned by James II for seditious libel over their opposition to the second Declaration of Indulgence, however they were not found guilty. The bishops were: Thomas White, Bishop of Peterborough; Francis Turner, Bishop of Ely; Sir Jonathan Trelawny, Bishop Exeter and Winchester; John Lake, Bishop of Chichester; Thomas Ken, Bishop of Bath and Wells; William Lloyd, Bishop of Worcester; and William Sancroft, Bishop of Canterbury.
