Saint Thomas, one of the islands that makes up the United States Virgin Islands. In 1657 the Dutch West India Company established a post there with a view to profit from the plantations and sugar cane, from which the country thrived for many years. However, by the early 19th century, Saint Thomas was in decline. The United States attempted to purchase the Island in the 1860s, but failed to find domestic legislative support for the bid; they did however succeed in 1917.
