Probably the engagement between USS Hornet and HMS Cornwallis. The Hornet, which had mistaken the Cornwallis for a merchant ship was forced to throw boats, guns and other equipment overboard into order to escape, as they were heavily outgunned. From Bowen's "Naval Monument".
