The Wasp and Reindeer.
[Abel Bowen.]
[Published by George Clark. 1840.]
Wood engraving. 133 x 215mm. 5¼ x 8½". Few stains.
The battle between HMS Reindeer and USS Wasp was one of the hardest-fought naval actions of the War of 1812. The Wasp forced the Reindeer to surrender after far more than half its crew, including Captain William Manners, were killed or wounded. The Reindeer was too badly damaged to be salvaged so the Americans set her on fire. From Bowen's "Naval Monument".
