Rather gruesome ritual Native American artefacts; these human scalps suspended within frames were evidently held aloft on poles during dancing. Seth Eastman (1808 – 1875) was an artist and West Point graduate who served in the US Army, as a mapmaker and illustrator, who was instrumental in recording Native American life. Numbered 'Pl.11' below upper right; possibly for an edition of 'The American aboriginal portfolio' by the artist's wife Mary H. Eastman.
