Rare mezzotint on chine collé, platemark 740 x 490mm (29 x 19"). Very large margins. Damage to margins, extending inside platemark bottom right but without damaging chine collé.
The Virgin with John the Baptist adoring the Christ-child; angel on right. After the central panel of the altarpiece executed by Leonardo for the church of S. Francesco in Milan, executed in 1508. Charles William Campbell (1855-87) studied mezzotint engraving with Hubert Herkomer and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1887.
