Unusual portrait of the merchant and philanthropist Jonas Hanway (bap. 1712 d. 1786). He founded the Marine Society to recruit men for the Royal Navy, and gave enthusiastic support to the Magdalen Hospital for Penitent Prostitutes, amongst other causes. He has also been described as the first gentleman to walk the streets of London with an umbrella!
