John Hunter [1738 - 1821], Vice-Admiral; Governor of New South Wales from 1795 - 1800, succeeding Arthur Phillip. The Hunter River and Hunter Valley north of Sydney are both named after him, as is the suburb of Hunter's Hill in Sydney, and the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. Copied from the 1792 engraving by Orme after Robert Dighton. Published on the Continent.
