Engraving, frontispiece to Giovanni Paolo Marana’s 'The First Volume of Letters Writ by a Turkish spy'. 120 x 75mm, 4¾ x 3”. A reasonably strong impression; slightly tatty margins.
The fictional bearded spy is seated at a table in his study, holding a quill; hour glass, mathematical instruments, ink bottle, and paper on table. Sphere in the lower left foreground, scrolls strewn on floor, next to two sacks of coins; bookshelf with books, three with inscribed spines, 'Alcaran', 'Tacitus', and 'St. Austin', behind his head. Room also contains a hanging lamp, mirror, and clock in background to centre; window, below which a framed picture of a man with a net and fish, on wall to right. Engraved by Dutch-born Frederick Hendrik van Hove (1628 - 1698).
