Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881), historian and essayist. From 1837 a recognised literary leader; eulogized heroes and strong governments, mistrusted technological progress and analysed brilliantly the sufferings of the common people. The 'Sage of Chelsea', his corrosive criticism and uncertain temper became legendary. From a series of portraits by Count Alfred Guillaume Gabriel d'Orsay (1801 - 1852), Paris-born artist and gentleman of fashion. His profile sketches of his contemporaries, to the number of 125, include among them nearly all the literary, artistic, and fashionable celebrities of that time.
