Portrait of Lord Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533 - 1592), one of the most influential writers of the French Renaissance, known for popularising the essay as a literary genre, and popularly thought of as the father of Modern Skepticism. His massive volume Essais ("Attempts") contains, to this day, some of the most widely influential essays ever written. Montaigne had a direct influence on writers the world over, including René Descartes, Blaise Pascal, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Eric Hoffer, Isaac Asimov, and perhaps even William Shakespeare. By Jean Charles François (1717 - 1769), inventor the crayon manner technique of etching in 1757. For Alexandre Savérien's 'Histoire des Philosophes modernes', published in eight 4to volumes from 1760-1767. 79 plates (and eight frontispieces) were engraved for the book.
