Oval portrait of King George II (1683 - 1760; reigned 1727-60); wearing velvet coronation robes, ermine cloak, chain and long white wig, holding sceptre in right hand, a curtain behind to left. The only son of George I: still a Hanoverian at heart, British affairs being guided mainly by Queen Caroline and Sir Robert Walpole and, later, by William Pitt the elder. An enthusiast for army dress and uniform; the last sovereign to command in the field, at Dettingen in 1743. Attributed to miniature painter James Nixon (c.1741 - 1812).
