Portrait of Katherine Stanhope (1609-1667), Countess of Chesterfield, full-length with arm resting on a rock in an open landscape. Eldest daughter of Thomas Wotton, 2nd Baron Wotton, Katherine was the governess and confidante of Mary Henrietta Stuart, Princess Royal. In 1660, Charles II created her Countess of Chesterfield in recognition of both her Royalist service during the Commonwealth. She married Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope in 1626); Jehan van der Kerckhove, Lord of Heenvliet in 1641; and Daniel O'Neill in 1662.
