An illustration after Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727 - 1785) to 'Orlando furioso (The Frenzy of Orlando)' (G. Baskerville, Birmingham) by Lodovico Ariosto (1474 - 1533). Ariosto's Italian romantic epic takes place against the backdrop of the war between Charlemagne and his Christian paladins, and the Saracen army which is attempting to invade Europe.
