Commemorative medallion of composer George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759); portrait bust in profile with a laurel frame, verso showing inscription attached underneath. A young female angel, standing to right, supports the medallion with ribbons; the whole in an oval with palm leaves border. The Commemoration of Handel took place in Westminster Abbey in 1784, marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the great composer's death in 1759. The commemoration was organised by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich and it took the form of a series of concerts of Handel's music, given in the Abbey by vast numbers of singers and instrumentalists.
