David Garrick (1717-1779), the English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer who influenced nearly all aspects of theatrical practice. He was a friend and one-time pupil of Dr Samuel Johnson. Here seated, leaning with his elbows on a table to left, left hand on a script labelled 'Macbeth', near an ink-pot and book, looking towards the viewer, wearing a wig with a queue, plain coat and lace cravat and collars.
