An early engraving by Houbraken for Birch's The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain. James Graham (1612-1650) 1st Marquis of Montrose, was a Scottish nobleman and soldier. He initially joined the Scottish Covenanters in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, but subsequently supported King Charles I as the English Civil War developed. He fought during the Civil War in Scotland on behalf of the King.
