Frederica Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia, Princess of Orange-Nassau (1751-1820) was the daughter of Prince William of Prussia and niece of Frederick the Great. She married William V Prince of Orange in 1767. The pair went into exile because of French intervention in 1795, living in Kew for several years, when this portrait was painted. After the war William became in 1813 became King William I of the Netherlands, the founder of the present Dutch monarchy.
