[Album of original etchings, various subjects, by Sir George Hayter.]

[Album of original etchings, various subjects, by Sir George Hayter.]

[c.1850.]
Composite set of twelve etched plates, numbered non-sequentially and largely printed in brownish ink, apparently from the artist's personal collection. Stitched but disbound and lacking boards, with marble endpapers; folio, 345 x 255mm (13˝ x 10"). Signed 'George Hayter 1852' in ink to front free-endpaper, original pen and ink sketch from life by Hayter on thin scrap pasted to verso of fly-leaf. Showing the same bespectacled face in profile in two expressions, it is captioned “My father drawn with my eyes shut G.H. July 1806(?)”. Foxing to plates, waterstain to upper left corners.
The plates, titled and dated c.1812-1829, include a self-portrait of Hayter, study of a lion, a Saracen warrior on horseback, Saint Bernard, The Prophet Ezra, and Frontispiece to a Lady's Album. A unique and intimate collection. Sir George Hayter (1792 - 1871), portrait and history painter, son of the miniaturist Charles Hayter. He was appointed Queen Victoria's court portraitist in 1837.
