James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth (1649-1685) was the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II and his mistress, Lucy Walter. He was executed in 1685 after making an unsuccessful attempt to depose his uncle, King James II, commonly called the Monmouth Rebellion. He attempted to declare himself the legitimate King and capitalise on his position, albeit illegitimate, as the son of Charles II.
