[n.d. c.1860.]
Hand-coloured lithograph. 382 x 254mm. 15 x 10".
Charles Kean sits in an armchair with his feet in a tub of steaming water. A pile of letters and envelopes lie in a basket and on the floor. A phantom figure of Macbeth rises from a bowl of hot gruel on the table to his right. Charles (1811-1868) was offered a cadetship in the East India Company's service, but turned it down to follow in his father's footsteps and become an actor. He toured the United States twice, the second time with his wife, the actress Ellen Tree.
