A party of French sailors rowing towards the island of Tikopia in the south-western Pacific Ocean. Covering an area of 2 square miles, the island is the remnant of an extinct volcano; it is the southernmost of the Solomon Islands. Numbered 'Pl.172' upper right; from 'Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe', the account of Jules Dumont D'Urville's important expedition to the South Seas between 1826 and 1829. Publisher's blindstamp below title. After Louis Auguste de Sainson (1801 - 1887).
