[Francesco Ageno.]

[Francesco Ageno.]

T. Gainsborough R.A. del. F. Bartolozzi sculps R.A.
[London: Dennett Jaques, 1790.]
Rare Etching with stipple, portrait frontispiece to the sitter's 'Prose e rime del Signor Francesco D'Ageno'; published state. Sheet 190 x 125mm, 7½ x 5". Trimmed to plate at sides; diagonal creases through upper left and lower right corners.
Francesco Ageno was ambassador of Genoa at London from 1760 to 1781. Bartolozzi erased Cosway's name in the published state after Gainsborough remonstrated. Some impressions have a text which explains that Francesco Ageno was the Ministry of the Republic of Genoa at the Court of Great Britain and the image was from the collections of Girolamo Tonioli. After Thomas Gainsborough (1727 - 1788).
BL: 000029152. Hone 2 II. From the Norman Blackburn Collection.
