Luigi Sacco (1769-1836) was the first Italian physician to understand the value of vaccination, discovered first by Edward Jenner in 1798. He successfully spread the new method around northern Italy and from 1803 he became physician in chief of l'Ospedale Maggiore in Milan. This particular medal was struck in Sacco's honour by the municipality of Bologna.
