Frederick William (1620-1688) was the Elector of Brandenburg and the Duke of Prussia from 1640 until his death. He was of the House of Hohenzollern and was known as the Great Elector because of his military and political skill. He was instrumental in the strong position that Prussia held in the post-Westphalia political order or north-central Europe, due to his understanding of the importance of trade and its vigorous promotion.
