Very rare item of Wyllie ephemera. A personal invitation to an exhibition of the works of William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931); a prolific English painter of maritime themes. He studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and then moved on to the Royal Academy Schools. There he studied under Edwin Henry Landseer, John Everett Millais and Frederic Leighton. He exhibited all over the place, and by 1875 he had become a member of the Society of British Artists and in 1889 he was made an associate of the Royal Academy. In 1903 he became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and by 1907 he had been elected a full member of the Royal Academy. As a nautical fanatic, he campaigned extensively for the restoration of HMS Victory as a founding member of the Society for Nautical Research.
